  • The Lord is Always Prepared

Sometimes non-English speaking patients arrive at Water Street Health Services. We may not be ready ahead of time to translate, but the Lord is always prepared. We’ve been blessed by the “right” volunteer at our window who “just happened” to speak Japanese; the nurse volunteer who mid-sentence switched from English to French and brought a smile to her patient’s face; the person standing nearby who overheard an Arabic conversation and politely approached to ask if he could be of help.

Thank You, precious Father, for bridging the potential communication gap as only the Living Word can. Thank you for helping us to meet needs ...

  • Changed 2012: Victoria's Story

Victoria shares her thanks for Water Street Health Services (a ministry of Water Street), where she received treatment for her diabetes at a time when she was jobless and couldn't afford treatment. Health Services is funded by Lancaster County residents.

  • Thank you, WSHS volunteers!

    It's National Volunteer Appreciation Week!

May our faithful providers be blessed abundantly for their gifts of service each week to our Medical, Dental, and Behavioral clinics here at Water Street Health Services. In addition to the time they invest with us, these volunteers also work full- and part-time jobs, attend school, minister in their respective churches, go on mission trips and take care of their own families. Pray for them to be refreshed and renewed each day. Pray they would continue to boast in the Lord, and that their service would bring Him highest praise and glory. We are grateful for these ...

  • Do I Turn My Boat Around?

As I prepared for teaching our middle school Sunday school class this week, I was again struck by the compassion of Jesus. In Mark 6, Jesus had just heard the news that John the Baptist was beheaded. He understandably withdrew to a solitary place undoubtedly full of grief and sadness and needing some time alone. BUT…the crowds followed him. When his boat landed and he saw them, his response was one of great compassion. I probably would have turned the boat around and headed directly for the center of the lake!  Not Jesus. He saw the crowd and had compassion on them and ...

  • True Hope

Last summer I spent several days with my husband and children in Mt. Union, PA along with 80-90,000 other people at Creation Festival. Amidst the dust, the crowds of people and the loud music, God whispered a few things to my heart.

One in particular came through a rap artist who was gifted in preaching the gospel. He was so much about promoting the truth and hope of Jesus rather than promoting himself, that I was moved by his humility. A few words he shared resounded in my heart as the reason God has brought each of us here to serve at Water ...

  • The Strength of Working Together

It was a difficult discussion. Confrontation usually is. One of our patients at Water Street Health Services had violated one of our clinic policies, and we needed to talk about it with him. This type of situation is difficult in English, but in this case we needed to clearly convey the issue to one of our Spanish-speaking clients.

It was one of those days that reminded us just how thankful we were for three students volunteering with us. HACC had partnered with the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA) to launch a new Medical Receptionist program, and part of the coursework ...

  • Only 28

As we were gearing up for the flu shot clinic at Water Street Health Services, there were numerous times when I would feel a bit uneasy about waiting for our next flu vaccine order to arrive. We had completed one clinic in the dining hall of Water Street Mission and were scheduled for a second clinic at Water Street Health Services. Thoughts like these kept coming to my mind: "You really should have ordered more vaccine sooner. You will probably run out of vaccine during the flu clinic you advertised—that will be just great.”

Well, the day of the next flu shot clinic arrived and ...

  • God Alone is Unchanging

Life is full of joys and sorrows, good times and bad, abundance and lack, peace and suffering.  Only one thing is constant, sure, and unchanging in this life: God alone. He is reigning. He is God. His name is blessed and glorious.

This week I witnessed the truth of this in two people who were standing on this reality. I was checking a young man into the clinic this week. He had been raised in foster care. His face was sad and lonely. He shared briefly the sorrows, the lack, the suffering. When I asked him if he knew the Lord, he looked at me ...
