  • Take a Break Tuesday: 5/8/12

We're excited to introduce you to Carol. Her story is the latest in our "Changed" Spring Campaign, an effort to inspire people to continue changing lives.

"My daughter and I were living with my mother when my mother was admitted to the hospital. We soon learned that she would be moving into a nursing home rather than coming back home. Then the news came that to continue living in my mother's home, I needed to pay a large sum of money. I didn't have it, so my 13-year-old daughter moved in with her father, and I came here to ...

  • Take a Break Tuesday: 5/1/12

We're excited to share Ashley's poem with you. It's the newest story in our "Changed" Spring Campaign, an effort to inspire each other to keep changing lives.

Tall like the roof top, away in these walls.
    I surrender myself to you.
Each passing day turns into nights,
I see the bright city lights,
hoping one day I’ll be there soon.
I do the things asked of me by others.
I surrender myself to you, to show me my way,
But yet I yearn for that day to be free,
to have my life outside these walls,
    but until then ...
  • Changed: Sue's Story

Hello! My name is Sue. Although my story is unique it is very common with many others here at Water Street Ministries. When I arrived at the Water Street Mission, I was like many others: broken spiritually. I believed there is a God, but I was very angry and withdrawn from Him.

After months of self-evaluation and reflection I have learned to forgive myself as well as others. I have surrendered all of my burdens to the Lord and am striving to be less selfish and more selfless. I thank Water Street, all of the Women’s Counselors and all of the people ...

  • Thank you for taking good care of her...

What encouragement shared recently in the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era! Thank you to all of you who, through donating and volunteering, helped this woman find change!

    TO THE EDITORS:
I would like to thank the Water Street Rescue Mission for helping my "little sister,'' who is loved dearly and needed the counseling the mission offered for her mental well-being.

When her family was unable to get through to her, the mission was there. When she was unable to be there for two of her children with autism, the mission offered her more.

Thank you for taking good care of her.

  • Welcome, Intern Garrett!

    Intern Garrett

My name is Garrett Wood and I am a social work intern from Millersville University. I am working under Chuck in the Men’s Ministry side of the Water Street Mission. I choose to pursue an internship at Water Street, because during my freshmen year of college I became interested in working with the homeless population. As I came into a fuller relationship with God that was filled with joy and obedience, I realized that there is a lot of pain among people who are homeless. This is when I realized that I wanted to be able to help this population. ...

  • The Role A Father Should Play

Recently a couple from the Lord's House of Prayer provided tickets for the men I counsel at the Mission to view the film “Courageous”. The men were overcome with emotions as they watched the film. Many of them were in tears.

As we left, the men were sharing about their personal experiences growing up as children. They were also reflecting on the effect that their lives have had on their own children. Many of them said that the film helped them understand the role that a father should play in the life of their children.

Several of the men even took time ...

  • Children's Hopes for 2012

One morning last week, I asked kids living here at the Mission what they hope for in 2012. This is what they said:

"I wish for lots of grapes."

    "Summer."

    "A DVD of super man."

"I hope it gets hot, so we can go to wildwood in NJ."

    "I hope Jesus."

"Christmas all year and all night!"

    "I hope to get braces!"

"I hope to get hills (spoken by a 4-year-old girl)."

One child said, "Leave me alone," then came right back and said, "I want a princess!"

"A house, a little puppy and a car."

    "A dog."

Oh! Our kids at Water Street are awesome!!! I hope ...

  • My Best Christmas Ever

Earlier this week Jon, the Men's Ministry Director here at the Water Street Mission, found the following note on his desk. We hope you are encouraged and blessed by it!

    Dear Contributors,

My name is Joseph, and I am just one of the many men enrolled in the LifeRecovery Program here at Water Street. On October 15th, 2011, I decided to put my life on hold because of an alcohol addiction I've been battling for most of my adult life. This decision was difficult, because I'm leaving my children in the care of another. Everyday, I must remind myself that God led me ...

  • ThanksTurkey

Thank you, Accounting Department at Turkey Hill Dairy!

    Mr. Shertzer,

The Accounting Department at Turkey Hill Dairy decided that we needed to enhance the Thanksgiving season by sharing our thanks on a ThanksTurkey poster this year (we found these great posters online at www.ThanksTurkey.org). We realized that we are all blessed in so many ways and wanted to reach out to those in the community. We decided to sell each feather, on which we wrote what exactly we were thankful for, for $1 to benefit the Water Street Mission. All together we collected nearly $100!

Thank you for all that you do for the residents of Lancaster County who need ...
